Cyrus's face settled into a thoughtful frown. "Won't it show up on the X-ray gizmo?" |

Kyna went into the living room and returned a moment later with the metal attaché case and a fancy black metal camera case. "Stuff it in here next to the camera. I'll lock it and send it through with the bags. They hardly ever check domestic luggage." |

"Why don't I just lay my permit on them?" |

"It's a hassle. This way saves time. If anything happens you can always show it to them then." |

"What's in the briefcase?" Cyrus asked. The metal case looked awfully heavy to him. |

"About twelve million dollars. Come on. It's time to go." |

At eight-fifty that evening a connecting Delta flight from Atlanta landed at Memphis International Airport. Among the last passengers to deplane were three black men wearing business suits that had been made on Oxford Street in London. The first man was short, muscular and bald. The second was taller, with short bushy hair, a wide flaring nose and a neat goatee. However, it was the last man who turned heads in the terminal. He was bald, with a hawklike face covered with tattoos and a body that was so tall and thin that he would have had to gain twenty pounds to be considered anorexic. Where his companions sported silk ties and heavy, gold Swiss and German watches, the Dark Man wore a band of colorful beads around his neck and a tarnished Timex old enough to be used in a TV testimonial on his right wrist. The trio went directly outside and walked up to the first taxicab they saw. |
